Health Screening Programs
In 2004, the Massachusetts Legislature enacted Chapter 181 of the Acts of 2004 “An Act Relative to Eye Examinations for Children” which amended M.G.L., Chapter 71, Section 57. An important requirement of the amendment is that:
“Upon entering kindergarten, or within 30 days of the start of the school year, the parent/guardian will present to school health personnel, certification that the child has passed a vision screening with in the previous 12 months… For children who fail to pass the vision screening and for children diagnosed with neuro development delay, proof of a comprehensive eye examination performed by a licensed optometrist or ophthalmologist chosen by the child’s parent or guardian indicating any pertinent diagnosis, treatment, prognosis, recommendation and evidence of follow-up treatment, if necessary, shall be provided.”
In accordance with the 105 CMR 200.400, Randolph Nurses will screen students in the year of school entry, and annually through grade 5. The vision screening is repeated in grade 7 and grade 9.
The hearing of each student in the Randolph Public Schools will be screened in the year of school entry and annually through grade 3. This hearing screening will be repeated in grades 7 and 9.
Postural screening is conducted yearly for all children in Grade 5 through Grade 9. This is not a diagnostic service but does provide screening for postural problems prevalent in this age group which sometimes need medical attention. Postural screening is required by M.G.L. c. 71, sec. 57. It is the responsibility of the school to see that each child is screened and referred as appropriate unless the parent makes a written request for exemption on religious grounds to the nurse annually.
Growth and Development Screening
105 CMR 200.500: School nurses have measured the height and weight of students since the 1950’s. This year Body Mass Index (BMI) and corresponding percentile of each student in grades 1, 4, 7, and 10 will be calculated and reported directly and confidentially to a parent/guardian. Parents/guardians may request, in writing, that their child not participate in the reporting. This request must be placed annually with the respective school nurse. No special request form is required.
