Boston Globe Story

1phoRHscrimmage_0902.jpgThe Blue Devils hosted Courvilloise High, from Quebec City, during its second annual football camp last week. Roughly 35 athletes and six coaches arrived in town on Tuesday after an eight-hour bus trip from Canada. For two hours each morning, Courvilloise practiced at Memorial Field and also had access to the locker room, pool, and weight-training facilities. After practices, the team made its way to some of the area’s touristy spots.
“We’re in the process of building and rebuilding, and I thought this would be a good opportunity to do something different that may draw out kids to be part of something different,’’ Cotton said.
The two teams play under different rules during the season: there are 12 players on a side in Canada (vs. 11), and three downs vs. four. On Friday, Courvilloise and Randolph were scheduled to scrimmage, playing under American rules. “Football is football,’’ said Cotton.
Courvilloise coach Dave LeClerc, who is also the school’s athletic director, e-mailed officials at Randolph in March about his team visiting for a week. LeClerc was looking for a facility for the squad to practice on a trip that also would include sightseeing.
Mike McGrath, in his second year as Randolph’s athletic director after a seven-year run as the hockey coach at Mansfield, was excited about the opportunity for the Blue Devils athletes.
Randolph arranged for lunches and dinners to be catered and opened up its facilities for the Courvilloise football team. The visiting team stayed at a hotel in Weymouth, but the majority of their trip was focused on football. The teams gathered for meals together and had the chance to interact.
“It’s a great opportunity for our kids to meet kids from a different country,’’ McGrath said. “It may be Canada, but they speak a different language and it’s interesting to watch the kids learn how to interact with each other.’’
Most of the Courvilloise players and coaches speak French as their first language, making communication a challenge. There are enough English speakers to translate, but Cotton encouraged his players to interact with everyone.
Last year, with seven returning players from a 1-10 season, Randolph finished 2-8. But the player numbers increased to 75 and Cotton is hopeful of maintaining that depth again.
“We’re certainly hoping that we can build a relationship after this first year,’’ said McGrath.
